Tensions rise between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority

Tuesday, May 31, 2005 |

Hamas has decided to boycott a revote in some municipalities, after the Palestinian Authority (PA) accused the Islamic terror group of voter fraud and a court ordered a recount. "Hamas has decided not to participate in the so-called rerun in local councils in the Gaza Strip," Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri told a news conference in Gaza City. “Hamas is calling on our people to boycott the process. Hamas will not recognize the result of these elections." The dispute underscores a power struggle between Hamas, which seeks the destruction of Israel, and the PA ahead of Israel’s planned pullout from Gaza. A conflict with Hamas could imperil the fragile four-month-old cease-fire with Israel brokered by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.
