Settlers establish ‘stronghold’ in Gaza hotel

Wednesday, June 01, 2005 |

Dozens of settlers from Judea and Samaria and their supporters have moved into a dilapidated Gaza hotel, equipped with barbed wire and food supplies, for a last stand against the Gaza pullout that is set to begin in mid-August. “I think that if enough of us get out there and demonstrate in any legal way that we can, that we can hopefully stop this,” said settlement activist Eve Harrow. The settlers are arriving before the army declares Gaza a closed military zone, sealing the area off to prevent the arrival of anti-pullout protesters. The 140-room hotel was once a beach resort but was closed down when the Palestinian terror war scared tourists away. Activists are refurbishing the hotel and have renamed it Maoz Hayam--the Stronghold by the Sea.
