Clash on the Temple Mount

Monday, June 06, 2005 |

Israeli police stormed the Temple Mount and threw stun grenades to disperse hundreds of Palestinians who threw stones at Jewish visitors. The site is home to the Mosque of Al Aksa, the third holiest place in Islam. There were no injuries, and police quickly withdrew after Islamic authorities promised to restore calm. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said Jews should not have been allowed to enter the site. "The Israeli government and the international community must stop these unjustified and dangerous violations,” Abbas told reporters in Ramallah. ”They must prevent friction.” The Temple Mount is where the Palestinian terror war, or so-called “Al Aksa Intifada,” erupted in September 2000.
