Fearing violent resistance, the Israeli army will forcibly disarm Jewish settlers in the Gaza Strip who do not voluntarily hand over their weapons, ahead of the pullout which is due to begin in mid-August. Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz made the announcement at a closed-door meeting of the Knesset (parliament) Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. The settlers say it’s a bad idea. “What they're going to do is take away what people use for personal defense, so what is the point of disarming people?” said settlement activist Eve Harrow. In a non-violent protest, dozens of army trucks, tractors and bulldozers were painted orange, the color adopted by opponents of the Gaza pullout.
