Hizbollah wins big in Lebanese elections

Monday, June 06, 2005 |

The Islamic terrorist group Hizbollah has won big in general elections in South Lebanon, meaning it will continue to pose a dangerous threat on Israel’s northern border. After Syria pulled out of Lebanon last month, the US demanded that Hizbollah be disarmed, but buoyed by victory, the group says that won’t happen. "The aim is to defend Lebanon,” said Sheikh Naeem Kassem, deputy head of Hizbollah. “But to defend Lebanon we must defend with weapons…Today, southerners said this and the international community must listen." Hizbollah credits its guerilla fighters with driving Israel out of Lebanon in 2000, and it seeks the destruction of the Jewish state.
