Efforts to salvage cease-fire

Wednesday, June 08, 2005 |

Israel has warned the Palestinian Authority to prevent the Islamic terrorist group Hamas from shelling Israeli communities in and around the Gaza Strip. Hamas rockets killed three non-Israeli workers yesterday, an Asian and ironically, two Palestinians. These “events are another example of the weakness of the Palestinian Authority in imposing its will on the terrorist groups," said Israel’s new army chief Lieutenant-General Dan Halutz. But he added that Israel would act with restraint to preserve the four-month-old “cease-fire.” "First of all I'd suggest that Israel should not act like terrorists,” Halutz said. “Fury is not a plan of action." Israel says it won't pull out of Gaza this summer under fire. But Hamas wants to show that it drove the Israelis out.
