Qureia warns that Palestinian lawlessness is intolerable

Wednesday, June 15, 2005 |
Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia has threatened to halt government functions if armed chaos in the West Bank and Gaza doesn't end. "There are violations, especially by members of the security forces themselves,” Qureia said. “This is not acceptable, and the average citizen can no longer live with this chaos. If no limits are placed on the deterioration in the security situation, the government will suspend its responsibilities." Restoring law and order is a key reform promised by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, but he has failed to seize control from the armed gangs that rule the streets. In an attempt to restore order, the Palestinians reimposed the death penalty for the first time in four years. Four criminals were executed on Sunday.
