Sharon-Abbas summit tomorrow

Monday, June 20, 2005 |
Ariel Sharon will meet Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas tomorrow at the Prime Minister’s residence in Jerusalem to coordinate the Gaza pullout. Abbas has promised a peaceful withdrawal, but as the above attacks and attempted attacks indicate, he is too weak to deliver. The two leaders will also discuss plans to destroy the 1,200 Jewish homes in the 21 Gaza settlements that will be dismantled. Israel will demolish the buildings after evacuating more than 8,000 settlers and the Palestinians will remove the rubble. The surprise agreement is in the interest of both sides. Israel can avoid the spectacle of Palestinians celebrating in abandoned Jewish homes, and the Palestinians can build high rise apartments to ease the housing shortage in overpopulated Gaza.
