Low expectations for Sharon-Abbas summit

Tuesday, June 21, 2005 |

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas held their first summit since declaring a cease-fire four months ago. The meeting was held at Sharon's residence here in Jerusalem. The aim was to coordinate Israel's planned withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, which is set to begin in just two months. Abbas has promised a peaceful transition and to prevent Palestinian terrorists from firing on Israeli soldiers and settlers as they withdraw. But Israel doubts that Abbas can deliver. "As things stand now, powers have not been brought to bear in fighting terror," Deputy Premier Ehud Olmert told Israel Radio. The Islamic Jihad group carried out a wave of attacks this week, leaving two Israelis dead and rattling the cease-fire. Sharon will tell Abbas that there's no hope for peace unless terrorists are disarmed.
