Deal emerging on Philadelphia Corridor

Thursday, June 23, 2005 |

Israel is ready to hand over the volatile Philadelphia Corridor to Egyptian control, as part of the upcoming pullout from the Gaza Strip. Under the emerging agreement, Egypt would deploy troops on the border and prevent the smuggling of weapons from its territory to Palestinian terrorists in Gaza. Israel believes a complete Gaza pullout would take away any excuse by Palestinians there to continue attacks. But critics say the deal defies logic because Egypt has turned a blind eye to the weapons smuggling that has fueled the four-and-a-half-year-old Palestinian terror war. They say if Israel leaves Philadelphia, weapons smugglers will turn Gaza into an arsenal.
