Quartet presses Israel to ease roadblocks

Thursday, June 23, 2005 |

The Quartet of world powers responsible for the Mideast peace process has demanded that Israel allow the Palestinians more freedom of movement. At a meeting in London, the US, Russia, European Union and UN issued a statement saying Israel should "take immediate steps, without endangering Israeli security... to facilitate rehabilitation and reconstruction by easing the flow of goods and people in and out of Gaza and the West Bank and between them." Israel was baffled by the demand, considering that many suicide bombers have been intercepted at roadblocks and checkpoints in recent weeks. The Quartet statement made no mention of that.
