Victory for the settlers?

Monday, June 27, 2005 |

Analysts say the clash was a victory for the settlers that left them looking determined and the government looking weak and unorganized. "The army succeeded yesterday in carrying out a military mission, but disengagement foes won from the standpoint of public consciousness. The government was mute," wrote analyst Alex Fishman in Israel's biggest newspaper “Yediot Ahronot.” "The army is headed for disengagement leaning on very narrow government shoulders." Polls show a sharp drop in public support for the withdrawal which has created turmoil and divided the nation.
