Gay pride parade in Jerusalem turns violent

Friday, July 01, 2005 |

An ultra-Orthodox Jew stabbed and wounded three marchers at the annual Gay Pride parade here in Jerusalem. Ultra-Orthodox hecklers shouted insults, as thousands of gays and lesbians marched through the streets. "Homo sex is immoral," read a sign carried by one protester. Jerusalem's Ultra-Orthodox mayor Uri Lapolianski had banned the parade on grounds that it offends Jewish, Christian and Muslim sensibilities, but the ban was thrown out in court.
