Abbas invites Hamas into the government

Sunday, July 03, 2005 |

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has invited Hamas to join his Cabinet to help ensure a peaceful Israeli pullout from Gaza. Hamas is considering the proposal, but Israel opposes it. “Hamas is a terrorist organization that's been responsible for countless acts of indiscriminate violence against Israeli civilians,” said Israeli spokesman Mark Regev. “From the Israeli point of view, Hamas is part of the problem; it is not part of the solution.” Abbas hopes that if Hamas enters politics, it will abandon violence.
