Video: Tel Aviv during the siren

At 11 o'clock local time, the sirens sounded across the country. For two minutes, the land came to a standstill and commemorated the fallen soldiers and victims of terror. Immediately after, ceremonies began at nearly every cemetery in Israel, with the official commemoration taking place at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.

All throughout the day, Israeli television broadcast the names of our fallen sons and daughters, of those who have given their lives for this country.

Tonight, our grief will give way to joy as we celebrate what so many have died to achieve - a secure and independent State of Israel. It's a jarring, but incredible transition, a fitting testimony to the resilience of the Jewish spirit.

Below are pictures of Israelis standing at attention during this morning's memorial siren.
