Israel finalizes Gaza pullout timetable

Sunday, July 10, 2005 |

Israel's forced evacuation of 21 Gaza settlements is scheduled to begin on August 17th. Officials say that two days before then, Israeli troops will go from house to house and inform residents that their presence is illegal and they have to leave. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is giving the settlers an offer they can’t refuse: Those who won’t leave voluntarily could lose tens of thousands of dollars in government compensation. With many settlers moving out and others filing for compensation, the pullout appears to be a done deal. Deputy Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said he expects the “disengagement” to take only two weeks.
