Army chief warns troops against disobeying Gaza pullout orders

Tuesday, July 12, 2005 |

The Israeli Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Dan Halutz has sent a stern warning to troops and officers--anyone refusing to evacuate Jewish settlements in Gaza will be severely punished. "The army will have no forgiveness, compromises or dual standards in everything regarding the obligation to fulfill orders," Halutz said in a letter. "Refusing an order is a one-way street that is irreversible for those who choose to take it." The warning comes as a small number of soldiers who oppose the pullout have refused to obey orders and become conscientious objectors. Some of the soldiers are settlers themselves. The army will have enough problems with mass protests, and the last thing it wants is for refusing orders to become a trend.
