Iranian Moslem wins at Maccabiah Games

Monday, July 18, 2005 |
An unusual problem occurred at the Maccabiah Games when Iranian-born Moslem Mohammad Babulfath, representing Sweden, went undefeated in the 84-kg weight class of Greco-Roman wrestling at Hadar Yosef on Sunday. The Swedes claim they don’t know how they wound up at the Maccabiah, which is primarily for Jewish athletes. Apparently, an invitation posted on the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Style’s (FILA) website and signed by President Dr. Solomon Stolar paved the way. Some of the athletes did not know they were attending a Jewish event, but rather thought they would be competing at an Israeli event. In the end, the gold medal was awarded to second-place winner Denis Nikolev, who said that Babulfath should have taken the gold or at least stood on the podium with him.
