IDF to halt disengagement if attacked

OC Southern Commander Major-General Dan Harel said that if Palestinians attack Israelis citizens or soldiers during Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, the IDF would temporarily halt the evacuation to retaliate. “If the current level of Palestinian violence will continue during the disengagement, we will enter the Palestinian area with large land forces,” he said, noting a daily average of 10 attempted terrorist attacks in Gaza. Harel also said that although specific units have been assigned to evacuate settlers, additional units will remain on alert in case Palestinians open fire on Israelis. Following this past weekend’s attack at the Kissufim crossing that killed two Israelis and wounded five others, soldiers plan to evacuate the most northern settlements first and then move southward. While the IDF has encountered internal and external struggles, Harel believes his soldiers have proven they’re prepared to handle their task.
