Abbas to move into Gaza before Israeli withdrawal

Tuesday, July 26, 2005 |

Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas has made plans to move to Gaza before the planned removal of Jewish settlers from the Gaza Strip. Abbas said PA headquarters will remain in Gaza until the end of Israel’s withdrawal. His move is aimed at strengthening PA authority in Gaza following clashes between Hamas and the PA’s Fatah faction in recent weeks. Hamas has had the popular support of the Arab population in Gaza, but the PA chairman hopes to change all that.
