Concerning the Children

Wednesday, July 27, 2005 |

A Knesset (parliament) Committee addressed the treatment of children during the pullout from Gaza. They stressed the need for everyone concerned to treat the children with the utmost sensitivity and not allow them to be separated from their parents. Member of Knesset Gila Finkelstein (National Religious Party) spoke up for teenagers arrested during anti-disengagement protests who are still imprisoned. “Is this the same state that signed an international amnesty for children’s rights, which holds girls in detention for over three weeks without minimal amenities?” Finkelstein asked the panel. Committee Chairman Ran Cohen (Meretz-Yahad) responded that they would arrange a fact-finding visit to the Ma’asiyahu prison next week to see how the girls are being treated and find out why they’re still in custody.
