Black Hebrews join the Israel Defense Forces

Monday, August 08, 2005 |

The “Black Hebrews” an African American community that left the United States and settled in the Israeli town of Dimona in 1969, will soon be serving in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Ten men will join the Nahal brigade, a combat unit, where they’ll train and serve for 18 months. After their army service, they’ll begin setting up an organic farming community (kibbutz) on government-allocated land, just five kilometers east of Nitzana in Israel’s southern Negev Desert.
