Gearing up for the pullout

Tuesday, August 09, 2005 |

Jewish residents in Gush Katif have been issued 3,100 containers to pack their belongings by August 15th, when the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) will come to remove them from their homes. At midnight on August 14th, the Kissufim crossing, the main entrance to the Gush Katif Settlement Bloc, will be closed off to everyone. Those who do not leave willingly will be issued evacuation orders, forcibly removed from their homes by August 17th, and not allowed to return. Synagogues will be demolished after the Religious Affairs Ministry removes all Torah scrolls and prayer books. All Mezzuzot (tiny rectangular box containing Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21 attached to doorposts) will be removed. Included in the evacuation is the small Bedouin village of Dehaniya, which has close ties with Israel. Arab residents will be transferred to other villages and their town demolished. Once the pullout is complete, the government will erect a security fence. In the Photo: Girls were arrested yesterday in Jerusalem while protesting against the evacuation.
