Israel demands new border terminal

Tuesday, August 09, 2005 |

Israel is expecting the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Egypt to build a new border terminal near Kerem Shalom, replacing the Rafah terminal, or they will cancel their customs union with the Gaza Strip. The PA and the international community have been pressuring Israel not to exclude Gaza from their customs agreement, but Israel wants to maintain its security supervision at the Sinai-Gaza Strip border crossing. Israel said they would withdraw their troops as early as the end of 2005 as long as Egyptian troops are deployed along the Philadelphi route to ensure security.
