Tisha B'Av a little sadder this year

Monday, August 15, 2005 |
Yesterday, on Tisha B'Av, the 9th of Av, Jews fasted and mourned the loss of the First and Second Temples. But it was so much sadder this year. There's an undeniable heaviness in the air. The Book of Lamentations, the traditional reading for this day, seemed to apply to the Israeli people, not only in Gush Katif, but throughout the country. Earlier this year, the government postponed the plan so it wouldn't be associated with the major calamities that have happened to the Jewish people on Tisha B'Av. But their plan didn't work. The country mourns, but this year it's not just over the loss of the Jewish Temples. It's over the trampling of our own people and their life's accomplishments.
