Over 600 families evacuate Gaza, 5,000 expected to resist

Tuesday, August 16, 2005 |

The first day of the pullout from Gaza Strip and northern Samaria proved as emotional as expected, with soldiers embracing settlers as they faced the reality of the government’s evacuation plan. The two most northern settlements, Nissanit and Dugit, have been evacuated. Though some 600 families have left, 5,000 settlers are expected to resist to the end. Police have promised to forcefully remove any Jews who have not left Gush Katif by tomorrow morning. In the Picture: A settler woman cries on the shoulder of a woman soldier in Neve Dekalim Settlement.
