Evacuation of Netzarim underway

Monday, August 22, 2005 |

Early today, residents of Netzarim, the only remaining Jewish community in Gaza, removed the large menorah (candelabrum) from the roof of their synagogue. They’re planning to take it with them to temporary housing in the dormitories of the Ariel College. Residents gathered in the synagogue to pray before the army began expelling them from their homes. The army said they will complete the evacuation sometime this afternoon. The Netzarim residents are the last Gaza Jews to be evacuated. The 80 families hope to rebuild Netzarim in the Negev.
