Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz announced today that Israel and Egypt have agreed on the details of turning the Philadelphia corridor to Egyptian control. Egypt will deploy 750 Egyptian border policemen on its side of the border to prevent weapons smuggling into Gaza. In the past, Egypt has turned a blind eye to weapons smuggling from Egypt into Gaza. On Army Radio this morning, Mofaz said the agreement gives Egypt “comprehensive responsibility…[to prevent] weapons smuggling in the Philadelphia corridor in tunnels and above ground, into the Gaza Strip.” The agreement specifies that 750 Egyptian border police will patrol the border, from armored personnel carriers and from observation towers posts they will erect.
