Yeshiva student murdered

Thursday, August 25, 2005 |
One day after Israel finished evacuating 21 Jewish communities in Gaza and four in northern Samaria, an Arab knifed two yeshiva students just inside the Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem’s Old City. Stabbed in the stomach with a 12-inch (30-cm) kitchen knife, 21-year-old British student Shmuel Matt was rushed to Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital, where he died on the operating table within an hour.

The other victim, an American, was stabbed in the leg, but he managed to get to a nearby police station to summon help. He is in stable condition at Shaarei Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem. Though the attacker fled the scene after dropping his weapon, a video camera (one of many police have placed throughout the Old City) recorded the attack.

The incident was the second stabbing attack in Jerusalem in a little over a month. In July, an Arab assailant stabbed a young Israeli sitting on a bench with his girlfriend. The attacker has not been found.
