Suicide bombing in Beersheba

Sunday, August 28, 2005 |
In the first terrorist attack following the withdrawal of Israeli citizens from Gaza and northern Samaria, a Palestinian suicide bomber blew himself up at the entrance to Beersheba's central bus station. Initial investigations indicate that he wanted to target Soroka Medical Center, but blew himself up outside the crowded bus station instead. Shortly before the 8:30 a.m. explosion, the bomber asked the driver if his bus went to Soroka. After diverting him to another area, the driver alerted security guards who pursued him until he detonated his bomb. Both guards were critically injured. Forty eight others were taken to Soroka, most with light injuries and many in shock. Israel suspects that Hamas is behind today's bombing.
