By a vote of 18 to two, the Cabinet approved turning over the 14-kilometer (nearly nine-mile) Philadelphi[a] corridor to Egyptian control. The narrow stretch of land runs along the border between Gaza and Egypt. Minister of Education Limor Livnat and Minister-without-portfolio Tzahi Hanegbi voted against the nearly unanimous decision. MK Binyamin Netanyahu voiced his opposition to the protocol: "Sharon's decision to put Israel's security in the hands of the Egyptian army, instead of in the hands of the IDF, is yet another mistake that will give a prize to terror and allow [smuggled] weapons to arm the terrorist infrastructure that will be built in the Gaza Strip." The measure is expected to be approved by the full Knesset tomorrow, though the opposition will voice its objections before the vote.
