Fate of Gush Katif synagogues still pending

Monday, August 29, 2005 |

Following last week's Supreme Court ruling to allow all but two of the 20 synagogues in Gush Katif to be destroyed, a Cabinet decision and restraining order have halted the demolitions temporarily. The synagogues in Slav and Tel Katifa are slated for dismantling and reconstructing. At yesterday's Cabinet meeting, Shlomo Amar and Yona Metzger, Israel's chief rabbis, and several members of the Chief Rabbinate Council said that it's forbidden to destroy synagogues. Yet having seen what Moslems do to Jewish holy sites, such as Joseph's tomb in Nablus, it's pretty certain that any synagogue left standing will suffer the same fate.
