Back to school

Thursday, September 01, 2005 |
Some 1.7 million Israeli children headed back to school today, up 2 percent from last year’s enrollment. Of the student body, 37 percent attend some kind of religious school. Plenty of police and security personnel were on hand to ensure their safety. Of the 3,200+ children evacuated from the Gush Katif Settlement Bloc in Gaza, 1,000 are still not enrolled for the new school year. Many families are still in hotels, guest houses, tent cities and other temporary housing, so getting children into a school hasn’t been easy. Temporary pre-school and kindergarten classes have been set up at some hotels, while a variety of other solutions are in place in towns and cities where evacuated families are living. MK (member of Knesset) Gila Finkelstein (National Religious Party), a high school principal, offered to teach the children living in a tent city.
