Israeli aid to hurricane victims

Sunday, September 04, 2005 |
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon says Israel will send a medical team to the US Gulf coast to help victims of the hurricane. “I want to point out that the US has stood by us during difficult times, and it is our duty to assist it in the areas in which we can help,” Sharon said at the weekly Cabinet meeting. “I want to reiterate my condolences and my sharing in the grief there. We will do everything in our power to render assistance in the difficult situation in which so many US citizens find themselves.” Israeli trauma teams have gained plenty of experience dealing with wars and suicide bombings, and they have been deployed to the Turkey earthquake, Rwanda and the Tsunami. But Israel probably never dreamt it would be offering such assistance to the wealthiest nation on earth.
