Supreme Court discusses fate of Gaza synagogues

Sunday, September 04, 2005 |

Israel’s Supreme Court held a special hearing today on the fate of the synagogues at abandoned settlements in Gaza. The Cabinet has decided to demolish the synagogues to prevent them from being desecrated by Palestinians. But rabbis are opposed, saying that according to Jewish Law, it is preferable for Gentiles to desecrate a synagogue than for Jews to destroy their own houses of worship. The court will decide on this dispute pitting religion against state at a later date.
