Israeli and Palestinian Commanders Tour Gush Katif

Monday, September 05, 2005 |
Israeli and Palestinian commanders held a joint tour of the abandoned Gaza settlements in Gush Katif. The Palestinians were given aerial maps of the settlements, which have been demolished by Israeli bulldozers. "They've been working with maps,” said Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat. “Now they need to work on the ground." The Palestinian Authority has promised to maintain order and prevent attacks by terrorists, once the army pulls out. Under another security deal, 750 Egyptian troops will deploy on the Gaza border this week to prevent weapons smuggling. Israel expects to complete the Gaza pullout in mid-September.
