Israel's Supreme Court has ordered the government not to demolish the Gaza synagogues, at least for now. The court was responding to an appeal by rabbis, who said destroying the synagogues is a desecration forbidden by Jewish Law. The court ordered the government to contact the Palestinian Authority and international community to seek protection for the synagogues once the Israeli army pulls out. The government wants to demolish the synagogues on grounds that they will be desecrated and looted by Palestinian mobs. The Palestinian Authority, which has little control over the militant masses, says it cannot protect the synagogues and they should be destroyed.
