Growing chaos

Dozens of Palestinians youths tried to storm through Israeli defenses into the former Jewish settlement of Neve Dekalim in Gaza. When Palestinian police failed to stop them, Israeli troops responded with live ammunition. One Palestinian was killed and three wounded. The army said soldiers opened fire when stone throwing youths climbed on a tank. It was the first such incident since Israel evacuated settlers from Gaza last month. The army is concerned that Palestinian mobs could storm into the former settlements before the pullout is complete, as Israeli defenses there have largely been dismantled. The army lodged a sharp protest with the Palestinian Authority over the incident.
