Abbas promises crackdown

Thursday, September 08, 2005 |
Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has vowed to track down the killers of general Moussa Arafat who was gunned down yesterday in a gangland-style hit in Gaza City. "This crime will not stop our efforts to maintain law and order," Abbas said after meeting with top security officials. The Popular Resistance Committees, a group of disgruntled terrorists from various factions, claimed responsibility. Despite the threats, Abbas has backed away from confronting heavily-armed militant groups, fearing civil war. So Gaza faces the prospect of armed chaos, as the Israeli army prepares to withdraw from the territory next week.
