Festival of looting at Gaza settlements

Tuesday, September 13, 2005 |
Palestinian police in Gaza have failed to restore law and order in the abandoned Gaza settlements for a second straight day, with looters taking anything they can get their hands on. They’re even destroying the greenhouses that were supposed to prop up the Palestinian economy, stealing plastic sheeting, hoses and electrical supplies. "These greenhouses are for the Palestinian people,” said Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia during a tour of the former settlement of Neve Dekalim. "We don't want anyone to touch or harm anything that can be useful for our people." Yesterday, Palestinians torched Gaza synagogues (see picture). The looting raises doubts over whether the Palestinian Authority can end lawlessness and armed chaos in Gaza. (A Messianic Jew, Palestinian Christian and Evangelical Christian will give their views on the Gaza pullout in next month’s edition of “israel today” magazine.)
