Security collapses on Egypt-Gaza border

Tuesday, September 13, 2005 |
Much of Israel’s Gaza pullout strategy was based on a security agreement with Egypt, under which 750 Egyptian troops would deploy on the border with the aim of preventing weapons smuggling to Palestinian terrorists. But as soon as Israel pulled out, border security collapsed. For the second straight day, thousands of Palestinians crossed the border as Egyptian guards stood by and did nothing. In a vain attempt to restore order, guards shot and killed a Palestinian. Egypt said it is simply letting Palestinians blow off steam and reunite with family members on the Egyptian side of the border. It promised to restore order, but Israel fears that all kinds of weapons could flow across the now porous border.
