Prime Minister Ariel Sharon says Israel opposes the participation of the Islamic terrorist group Hamas in Palestinian elections scheduled for January. He said if Hamas participates, Israel might not remove roadblocks in Judea and Samaria, making it difficult for Palestinians to vote. "We will make every effort not to help [the Palestinians],” Sharon told reporters in New York. “I don't think they can have elections without our help." Sharon said Hamas is a terrorist organization that seeks the destruction of Israel, and therefore, it should not be given legitimacy through participation in the democratic process.
