Anxious to show the world that he can control turbulent Gaza, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas announced that the border with Egypt will reopen only as part of an international agreement. Palestinian police sealed the frontier yesterday, after Palestinians tore down the border fence following Israel’s Gaza pullout. "We want to do the right job at the right time because we want to act as a state, as a responsible authority," Abbas said. "Therefore, we are following up on the subject seriously with our brothers in Egypt. Until we reach agreement, we should be patient." Following days of weapons smuggling, Egypt also tightened its side of the border, deploying 750 troops armed with assault rifles--part of a security agreement with Israel.
