Sharon faces new scandal

Facing a revolt in his ruling Likud party, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has been confronted with a new challenge following a report that that he violated campaign financing laws. According to Israel’s Channel 10 Television, Sharon attended a dinner where guests were asked to contribute $10,000 per couple for his Likud re-election campaign. That’s exceeds the legal limit of $7,800. Legislators across the political spectrum have demanded that the attorney general open an investigation. Officials close to Sharon deny any wrongdoing. "As long as you can't prove that Sharon got even one cent of money that was illegally raised, I recommend that you be careful," Vice Premier Ehud Olmert told Army Radio.
