Palestinians celebrate in abandoned Samaria settlement

Tuesday, September 20, 2005 |

The Israeli army pulled out of the evacuated Jewish settlement of Sanur in northern Samaria, and dozens of Palestinians moved in to celebrate. They prayed at an abandoned mosque, and hung Palestinian flags on the empty synagogue. But they did not destroy the synagogue, like Palestinians did in Gaza. Settlers were evacuated from the community a month ago. Palestinian police did not enter the settlement because the Israeli army still has overall control of the territory.
