The Palestinian Authority says it has started to enforce a ban on public displays of weapons by militant groups. "The role of resistance weapons has ended in the streets,” Palestinian police chief Ala Husni told a news conference in Gaza. “They should go back into storage and they should not show up in the streets. Any weapon now in the street is a criminal weapon." Hamas and Islamic Jihad have been holding victory parades displaying rockets, rifles and rocket propelled grenades since Israel pulled out of Gaza three weeks ago. The parades made Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas look weak. Abbas has been under Israeli and US pressure to disarm terrorists, as demanded by the “roadmap” peace plan.
