Israeli and Palestinian officials prepare summit

Friday, October 07, 2005 |
Israeli and Palestinian negotiators met today to prepare for next Tuesday's summit between Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas. They hope to find common ground on key issues. Israel wants the Palestinian Authority to crack down on terrorist groups and the Palestinians want Israel to release hundreds of prisoners. "We don't want a failed summit,” said Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat. “We want a successful summit, we want to agree on the substance." The aim of the summit is to revive the US-backed “roadmap” peace plan, in the wake of Israel's pullout from the Gaza Strip.
