Mofaz blasts Abbas

Friday, October 28, 2005 |

Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz says Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has become so ineffective that he is not a partner for peace. Interviewed in Israel’s biggest newspaper “Yediot Ahronot,” Mofaz described Abbas, who is also known as Abu Mazen, as a “one man show.” "Behind him, there is nothing, only emptiness. [It is a] governmental vacuum,” Mofaz said. “In fact, there is no one to talk to. Abu Mazen and his colleagues in the Palestinian leadership...haven't done a thing so far. The Palestinian Authority is not an address for us." Until now, Israel has avoided such harsh criticism of Abbas because he is a “moderate” supported by Washington. But Mofaz was expressing growing Israeli frustration over the Palestinian leader's inability to end terrorism.
