Police are investigating top Israeli archaeologist Hanan Eshel, after he purchased a Dead Sea scroll for $3,000. The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) accused Eshel of purchasing the scroll illegally and said he should have informed the Authority about its existence. The scroll, which was purchased from a Bedouin Arab, contains a scripture from Leviticus. “This whole thing is ridiculous,” Eshel said, adding that he thought he was doing the IAA a favor. “Instead of saying thank you, they are making a ruckus.” The IAA said Eshel purchased the scroll because he wanted to take credit for the find.
