Sharon hints strongly at leaving Likud

Sunday, November 20, 2005 |

While representatives of the Labor and Likud parties have apparently agreed to hold elections on March 28, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is rumored to have decided to leave the Likud in order to form a new “centrist” party. Justice Minister Tzipi Livni met with Likud Knesset (parliament) members Sunday afternoon to discuss a new party with Sharon at the helm. Livni told them that Sharon also wanted to avoid facing off against former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and ultra-hawk Uzi Landau in a Likud primary. Sources close to Sharon said that the prime minister already has "one foot out the door" of the Likud. The vote to dissolve the Knesset is expected to take place on Wednesday.
